After multiple conflicting reports and much speculation, it’s been revealed that Meghan Markle will not attend the Princess Diana statue unveiling in early July. Prince Harry is still expected to attend with his brother.

The unveiling of a statue dedicated to Princess Diana should be more about remembering the former Princess of Wales and her legacy and impact on the British people and the world. However, the tension between her sons after Prince Harry participated in an Oprah Winfrey interview has shifted much of the attention.

Now, the public is more interested in seeing how the brothers and their wives will interact with each other, rather than seeing the statue.

Well, at least one aspect of the event has been settled. Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle, who many blame for instigating tension between the two royal brothers, will not be attending, having given birth to her second child just last month.

A source told The Daily Mirror: “Meghan is not going to travel. She has just had a baby and Harry will travel alone.”

In addition, ITV royal correspondent Lizzie Robinson reported the same, “Meghan will not fly to the UK to join Harry for the unveiling of a statue of his late mother Princess Diana on July 1st, a source confirmed after a US website claimed she would be attending.”

To most of the British public, and Prince William and Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge, this is a welcome relief. Due to her actions, Meghan is mostly persona non grata in the United Kingdom and would likely have received a less than warm reception during the unveiling. 

There’s been plenty of talk that the so-called Duchess of Sussex will be on the receiving end of jeers and plenty of boos if she ever stepped foot on British soil ever again. 

If she attended, it would also take additional attention away from the statue unveiling, as there would be endless discussions on how she interacted with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. There will already be plenty of that between Prince William and Harry, no need to have Meghan there to complicate things as well.

It’s unfortunate that the unveiling of a statue, something that started years ago, instead of bringing Diana’s sons together will instead be about the divide between them. 

Hopefully, the focus will be on William, Catherine and their children, Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte. It makes sense that Prince Harry has to be there, but he may find that though he is without his wife, his reception is less than friendly as well.
